Alliance, Power Is Ageless [gp] January 29, 2007

Filed under: Announcements — Robin @ 10:44 am

After discussing at length what direction [GP] would move in, the membership decided to start our own alliance. We will consider guilds for membership as we find unallied guilds who fit with our general vision of a group of people with respect for one another, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, gathered having fun playing a game together.

Our first guild to join the alliance is one we’ve created, to address the problem that often we have been unable to offer membership in [GP] to otherwise good players because they do not meet our age requirement. Now, there’s good reason for the age requirement, I always want [GP] members to feel comfortable discussing whatever they want to discuss on guild chat, without worrying about treading on topics that young folks don’t need to be present for.

As such, we have created Power Is Ageless [gp]. Thanks to Nemesis Furiae for refining the cape design and contributing the Celestial Sigil. The hall we’ve chosen is the Isle of Solitude (the pretty Vabbian magic carpet bridge hall.) My alt account Xena Anadri is serving as Guild Leader, and officers will be [GP] folks alt accounts, to get the ball rolling. The same standards, minus being eighteen years old, apply to recruitment for the new guild. We’ll want to play with you for a while, see how you fit with us, see if we get along, just like we recruit for [GP].

Guilds interested in joining our alliance will go through a similar vetting process. We’re not in a hurry to fill up the other eight slots. We’re not faction farmers, we do not aim to and most likely will never hold any of the towns in Cantha. If a guild wants to join, we’ll want to spend some time playing with their members, get to know them, see if we get along.

Folks interested in joining either of our current guilds or allying with us, contact any [GP] member in game to introduce yourself, and we’ll see about setting up times to meet and get to know each other.

Girl Power and the Happy Hellion Nation part ways January 18, 2007

Filed under: Announcements — Robin @ 8:48 am

The following is the open letter I posted on the Hellion Forums, a few moments ago. I followed that by logging in and removing our guild from the alliance.

—————————————————————-

Girl Power Guild has come to the conclusion that it is best for our membership, and for the Hellion Alliance, for us to part ways.

The events and vitriol of the past few days were only part of the issue, although they are the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back.

We have been at this cusp before, multiple times in our history with the Hellions. Each time, it was due to rampant disrespect toward our members, a general failure to follow “the Code” that is in place. Each time, the Hellion Leadership dealt with the situation appropriately, although this sadly usually meant the loss of persons or guilds. Cumulatively, however, this has made us more and more uncomfortable, and has created a general dislike of our guild amongst HHN members that we very much feel.

This has evidently reached a fever pitch, as evidenced by Lurking’s sarcastic “Or we’ll just do what we always do when [GP] is upset” comment on public alliance chat last night. When this is the attitude of the leadership of the alliance toward fellow members and their concerns, it’s pretty much a sign that things have gone too far.

Our guild is more than half women, a good proportion gay, lesbian, bisexual and/or transgendered, and all feminists. It’s unfortunate that these things are not truly respected by the general population of the world, but it’s fairly grating that they are not respected by our “family” in the game. We play Guild Wars to have fun, it is a game after all, but having to daily ask people not to use “gay” in a derogatory manner or use “rape” at all (one in three women have been sexually assaulted – it is not funny) or deal with names coming through achat like “Steer not Qweer” and “Flapping Labia” drains the fun out of it pretty quickly.

The last time this came to a head, most of my guild wanted to leave. I did not, and pleaded with my membership to believe the Hellion Leadership’s promise of “things will be better.” We stayed, but things haven’t gotten better – and it is clear that they won’t. My membership is weary of it, and wants to leave, and I cannot ignore their feelings.

We believe this the best way to resolve the issue, for us and for the Hellions. We will not have the blood of another person or guild’s departure from the Alliance trying to enforce a standard that is clearly not in the hearts of the general membership on our hands.

We know that there are those among you whose response will be “Don’t let the door hit you on the way out,” that’s partly indictive of the problem. There are those among you, however, that we have come to call friends and saddens me that the situation has come to this. We hope that moving from voices on alliance chat to names in your flist will not mean the end of our association.

May our futures be bright.
